help removing headlight harness plug (pics)

Does anyone know how to remove the inside plug of the headlight harness so i can get some pins in there? I asked BMW concord and said there is some sort of special tool? It seems weird that a special tool would be required to pull out a plastic piece on two plugs.

I have already tried pliers, needle nose pliers and even jamming a flat head in there hoping to push a release pin. Any help would be appreciated!
