Stupid question from newbie

I have a 2014 335GT on order and it will have the Technology Package. Now, here is where the stupid comes in. What exactly will I be getting in this package and what is BMW ConnectedDrive? I have looked on BMW's US site and could not find some simple answers. Do I need a cell phone in order to use ConnectedDrive? (BMW's site implies that I do need one.) I only have a pay-as-you-go phone. Will this prevent me from using the system? Is the feature to use your phone with the app separate from ConnectedDrive or are they interconnected? That is, without a phone, no service.



Is it free? If it's free, for how long is it free? I did find that after the initial period, whatever that is since I couldn't find that info anywhere, there is an annual fee of $199 +tax.



I see there are all of these apps. Are they standard with the system? Really, I have no idea what this system is. It says you can send emails from your car. Why would I do that? I am suppose to be driving, not doing my emails. I don't want to come across as a luddite, but I really am confused about this system. :confused2



If someone will take the time to answer my questions, please be patient with me. I'm really not stupid when it comes to technology, but BMW's site talks to you like you already have the answers.
