E90 Roof Rack Cushion Pads?

I lost the URL to this one video on installing a roof rack on a E90. He used these skinny cushion pads with double-sided tape inside the gutters.



1- Does anyone know the exactly name of these things?

2- Are they required? Without them, will the mounts come in contact with the paint?
