Need Help on Base Stereo Upgrade

Alright I have spent a solid 8 hours reading info on all this and I think I have an idea on what I want to do and what is reported to work well. What Im hoping for is you guys who have done this to look over things and make suggestions.

Car / Objective:
2010 335i, base stereo, iDrive / nav
I am not an audiophile by any means, but really the sound quality of this stock setup is terrible, my girlfriends 2016 economy car sounds about 10 times better . The goal is to get clean, better quality sound through the full range.

Planned Setup:

  • Replace front speakers with 4" or 5.25" components and add the sail panel tweeters
  • Replace underseats with 8" mid woofer (not sub)
  • Leave stock speakers powered from stock source in rear deck
  • Add a trunk mounted sub, single 10" or 12"
  • Add a Digital Sound Processor to correct the terrible factory EQ
  • Add amp(s) to power front components, underseat mid and trunk sub
  • Possibly add an equalizer for all the amped speakers assuming the DSP doesn't include this

Where Im Lost:
  1. How are the front speakers and underseat speakers wired, is the left door and left underseat wired together or are they two separate outputs from the headunit? I.E. will my DSP need to be able to take 4 speaker inputs or just two?
  2. If there is only a single left and single right channel input will the DSP be able to recreate a good base EQ?
  3. I guess really all my questions relate to the DSP and how I get the factory output into an RCA format that doesnt have the funky BMW EQ stuff done to it.
  4. Anyone who has done this have a recommendation on a good DSP that fits my needs and isnt completely over the top? The way I see it I need 2 channels of full range for the door speakers, 2 channels of full range (equalized) for the mid bass, and one channel of bass for the sub.

I would say for the most part I think my plan is solid based on everything others have said on here. My biggest concern is the DSP stuff since I have never used one I really dont know if what Im thinking is correct. And all the DSP models typically used are discontinued....

Thanks for any help you can give me!
