I had the opportunity to test drive a 228i and M235i back to back today. The lease on my manual 128i is coming to an end this fall and I went into it looking for a possible replacement to the 128i. I don't have time for a long review so I will list out the quick points.
auto 228i:
- MUCH faster than you would imagine.
- synthetic sound pumped through the speakers sounds good but obviously not like a 4 banger.
- feels a bit soulless compared to the 128i
- looks good in person but when you look at the car it doesn't look anything special
- the fenders are less flared compared to the 1 series making it look less aggressive (especially back fenders)
- a VERY good alternative to the M235i...a manual with M sport package might be the way to go
- steering feel is much less heavy than my 128i, thats not a good thing
auto M235i:
- Feels fast but not dramatically (as in $10k more $$) faster than the 228i (as seen in the 0-60 times)
- looks similar to 228i overall except different bumpers and brakes, and shares similar weak points visually. has dual exhaust which looks nice.
- sounds REALLY good when you floor the gas peddle.
- steering feel is better than the 228i but not as good as my 128i
My take away is these cars seem too "refined". They are great cars but just not what I'm looking for. I have decided to either keep the 128i off lease or most likely pick up a CPO 135i with low miles.
I think a lot of us that are used to the "rawness" of our 1 series won't find the 2 series as inspiring as we expect.
Go take a test drive for yourself, but don't give up your 1 series until you do.
