Feeler: Custom Twin Oil Cooler

Background: I have an early build 335i with no oil cooler and during the summer or any hot day I've notice how high my temps go. So I figured it's time to get the oem oil cooler setup. Spending a couple hours sourcing parts, I realized going twin aftermarket was cheaper and more reliable.

I really don't want to fork out over $1300 for an ER Competition oil cooler yet alone the $700 for their basic setup, so I've started sourcing my own parts. With the build I'll be using oem filter housing and thermostat.

I've found pretty much everything they are offering except for a mounting bracket and shield. So far under $250 spent on parts ;)

I'll be fabricating my own mounts soon and fitting everything on my car.

I currently have a broken arm right now so this build will be slow. Not sure if anyone has done this yet as I'm too lazy to search.

Once everything is finalized I'll provide a list of parts and where to get them. I'll also provide blueprints for the mount or sell them.

Please don't bash my thoughts only kind words or GTFO.

3 track events and oil is still good!

Contrary to popular belief you do NOT have to change your oil after every track event.

I used to change my oil after each event but I decided to send my oil in to Blackstone Labs for an analysis. They said the oil was perfect and try doing 3 or 4 more events.

Well I did that. Below is the Oil Analysis report after 3 track events and the oil still looks good. It's only been about 3K total miles on the oil but either way, you do not need to change your oil after every event... at least for our dual purpose HPDE vehicles. :D

Here's the report:

Huge Custom Oil Cooler

In my quest to solve the dreaded limp mode which I've encountered on multiple tracks I finally decided to build my own Oil Cooler. It's sorta a copy of the Stett oil cooler but I'm using a 215 degree Improved Racing external thermostat vs the 180 degree Mocal thermostat that comes with their kit.

All in parts cost me about $900 but that's because I went with a huge 34 row Setrab oil cooler, Improved Racing External Thermostat, and very high quality industrial grade fittings and hose (long story). It could be $300-400 cheaper depending on options.

Even with the Mishimoto Radiator, I hit 270+ degree oil temps at the track. Cruising around town my oil temps were 240 degrees.

With new new oil cooler setup I'm now crusing at 215-220 oil temps! 20 degrees cooler is not too shabby. This, along with my vented hood will hopefully solve my cooling issues.

I have a track event next Friday Oct 9th so stay tuned for my report...

Enjoy the pics!

Crappy ebay hose... no one local sells the SS hoses or fittings that I needed so I had no choice but to buy all new industrial grade fittings and hose (very expensive but very highly quality).

New fitting and new hose. The ebay hose could be pinched with your thumb and pinky; this hose is rock solid.

Is there a benefit to higher end coilovers for daily driver

Hi All,

Just wondering if there is any benefit to higher end coilovers for a daily driver

Looking at kv1s, BC RC, and St.

But will spend the money if there is a benefit with say kv2s or kv3s or even Ohlins

Car will not be tracked

Thanks for the help

highest sidewall on 230's?

hello, after countless broken tyres on potholes, last double one (front and rear) happened yesterday, I want to put as much sidewall as possible on the stock recommended 225/35/19 wheel, but reading about this diameters and stuff, I am confused and the higher number don't necessary means it will be also higher sidewall, so what size would have highest sidewall? 225/40? 235/40? 230/45? basically I want to make it more comfortable and more room for tyre to squeeze when there are holes or jumps over the road, even though i don't think i will avoid another tyre crash in the future, i just wanna eliminate it as much as I can, with no downsizing to 18's
the rear is running now 255/35/19, over the recommended 255/30/19....but there is minimal difference, as this tyre also exploded yesterday, and it's nightmare, this is happening every second month to me...it's crazy. the car is old, nobody wants to pay any real money for it, so i have to keep it....but it's a disaster since the beginning about 3 years ago, i decided to buy it...

Diesel Prices Above Gas Again...Coincidence?

Noticed that the price of diesel in my area is up $.10 or more over gasoline now. Diesel was $.10-$.25 cheaper than gas here a week ago. It seems to be happening at the same time as the VW issue. Maybe just a coincidence, or could petroleum companies be forecasting a decrease in diesel fuel sales? Anyone else notice a price increase?

2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet a "Flagship Land Yacht!"

That'll Work...!

Quote:

Starting up top – literally – this big-boned beauty features a three-layer fabric roof to keep that old harpy mother nature at bay. It can be operated at speeds up to 37 miles an hour, taking just 20 seconds to fold away or redeploy.

Putting the roof down reveals what the company describes as a “yacht-like atmosphere,” which makes sense because the S-Class sedan on which this cabriolet is based has arguably the nicest interior in its segment. Top-shelf materials abound, as does tasteful design and tons of technology.

Keeping occupants comfy-cozy is a groundbreaking climate-control system. It’s fully computer networked and sports 12 sensors as well as 18 separate actuators. The car’s AIRCAP wind deflectors reduce turbulence and noise while the AIRSCARF system provides neck-level heating for maximum comfort. Beyond all of this, there are heated seats and optional heated armrests. Hell, you could probably drive one of these cars through a blizzard with the top down and still sweat your ass off.

S550 Cabriolet models sport a 4.6-liter V8 engine that churns out 449 horsepower along with 516 lb-ft of torque. They’re matched to a nine-speed automatic transmission for maximum driving pleasure and fuel efficiency.

Beyond this, the company will also offer a Mercedes-AMG version of this beast, the S63 4Matic Cabriolet. It features a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 with 577 horses and 664 lb-ft of torque. This variant can hit 60 miles an hour in just 3.9 seconds.

Despite losing its roof, the S-Class cabriolet’s body is supposedly just as torsionally rigid as the Coupe model on which it’s based. Despite sharing numerous components, a few special parts help up the stiffness of the droptop version.

As for all-important pricing and availability information, I can’t tell you when the new S-Class Cabriolet will go on sale nor what it will cost but later and A LOT are probably safe guesses.

Pricing is yet to be announced...

Bought the car in Feb. and I'm in between jobs and need to down grade. This was my dream car and is in excellent condition. No accidents, clean car fax, and all maintenance is up to date. Everything works perfectly even the seatbelt bars which break often. The red interior sold me on the car and it looks great with the aluminum trim.
I rather not part out, would like to sell as is. Im pretty firm on my price but can negotiate if reasonable. I dont drive this car hard at all, the mods I did were mainly cosmetic. This car will come stage 2 from Cobb pre loaded map.
I just added the downpipes 2 weeks ago and I love the gains and sound.

Official carbon wing mirror covers - Opinions?

I've recently picked up a Silver E92 Coupe M Sport and one mod I am tempted to try is changing the mirror caps to carbon fibre ones. Now my two questions are -

1. Do you think they'll be a nice contrast against the silver body?

2. Are the official BMW carbon wing caps worth the extra money?

Thanks

Next phase of Audio Upgrade

So next phase of my Audio upgrade is to amp door speakers.

Currently I have:
Head Unit - Dynavin N6, RCA outputs in the back :) http://ift.tt/1JC3lIL

Front Door Speakers - Rainbow IL C4.2 Speakers + Tweeters
Underseat Subwoofer: MB Quarts
Rear Speakers: BMW Individual
Boot: JL250/1 mono amp with JL250 Subwoofer

The existing amp only powers the Subwoofer in the boot. None of the other speakers are amp'd.

The following amps I have shortlisted so far:

5 Channel, so I could get rid of my existing JL250/1 mono amp
Rockford Fosgate Prime R600X5
Kenwood KAC 7005PS

4 Channel to run alongside my existing JL250/1 mono amp
JL JX400/4

I'm a right noob when it comes to car audio, however I do like challenges :cool!:

Here are my questions:
1) Do you see any problems with the amps that I've shortlisted?
2) I'm falling towards the RF amp, but what do you guys think?
3) Plan is to run RCA cables from the back of the head unit to the amp and then from the amp to speakers, this is how it's done, right?
4) Anything else I should know?

Thanks

Tesla Model X announced...Just need to find some more £££

So last night Tesla announced the production version of the Model X.

I absolutely love the way it looks, and the 'Falcon' doors are something else....

All the performance stats were known about before 0-60 in 3.3 seconds for the stupid quicker version, and 'only' 4.8 for the 'normal' 90D option...

But when you get old (like me) things like luggage space, and safety becomes important, especially when you have your own family to think about....the thing that sold it me (and my wife) was the crash testing photos - The side impact protection of this thing looks absolutely phenomenal compared to a X5/Q7.

The PCP deal on my Leaf ends early 2017, and fits in perfectly with first RHD delivery times for the Model X....Only problem is there is currently only one version announced the 90D, which will likely have a UK price of £70K+:confused0068:...That's just far too much for us to justify, falcon doors or not. A cheaper version is coming, but no idea when or how much cheaper....

For now I'm itching to press the 'Reserve now' button, but have to wait till a version we can afford is announced....Really should have worked harder in school

Hey guys I recently purchased a 2009 328i coupe, the previous owner replaced the headlight turn signals but they flicker on start up of the car. There is no error warning on the dash and they work fine but I want to try to get rid of the flicker. Does anyone know how to code the flickering out? I've searched all over the forums on different sites but can't find a solid answer. Thanks!

Charge Pipe From Hell Review - Cobb

Purchased a Cobb charge pipe last Wednesday (9/23) afternoon with 2 day shipping and it finally arrived Monday (9/28) afternoon.

THE REVIEW:
Upon receiving the charge pipe I inspected the outside, looks nice - good grey color. I wanted Cobb because of the color and didn’t really care about lack of meth bung. Fit and finish looked good, the couplers looked good. I've blown two stock CPs.

Upon inspecting the inside lip I noticed some weird stuff going on…Not really ideal for what I thought would be a quality product….owell lets give it a go.

First things first, I cleaned the throttle body lip with brake cleaner and then reapplied a thin coat of oil to aid in fit. I gave the charge pipe a push…nothing. I have installed VRSF and BMS charge pipes on friend’s cars so this isn’t my first rodeo. I kept struggling….nothing… No force on heaven was getting it on there, the intake flexed a little and the engine shifted under my force, but Mr. Cobb charge pipe kept resisting my best efforts.

So I took sandpaper to it. I figured it had some uneven section or maybe this black sh** on the inside of the lip was giving me issues.

After many sanding and test fits later, it still wasn’t going on, it was getting closer but no matter how many times I cursed Cobb it wasn’t going on. So I thought maybe I’m being crazy, so I took my stock charge pipe with the crack and pushed it on the throttle body. This took the effort I had been expecting, so I knew I wasn’t crazy.

I called Cobb 30minutes before closing time. Matt answered. I explained my ordeal and frustration. He would like me to take some images and send them to him, “they were closing soon, but he was staying late and would get back to me” I send the images with my phone # after I cleaned up some at 5min till closing. Not super quick turnaround but not bad for me having to do this dumb stuff. I wait. Wait. Wait. No answer no response, I call, hey they are closed and when they close calls go straight to VM….. FANTANSTIC…. I receive no call back the entire night. In fact, Matt emails me the NEXT morning saying “Thanks for sending this info over! Let me confer with my colleagues and I'll be in touch shortly!”

So I decided to up my game, I got my dremel out and started really sanding it down. Test fitting, sanding more test fit and so on… after bouts of dremel action it got 400grit then 800grit sand paper and wet sanded.

After removing all the powder coat overspray on the inside, which had some pitting even, and smoothing it down, I finally, after 3hrs was able to get it to slide on... holy mother of god a 20min project took 3hrs. My hands and arms are busted up from trying to fit this damn thing, the charge pipe got scratched up after I gave up trying to protect the finish after the 15th test fitting and decided my arms needed more focus to stop the bleeding.

The reason it took so long is I didn’t want to over sand it and create some area that would leak boost…All in all I test fitted that dumb pipe maybe…. 30 times.

Pros:
· Color
· It works like a charge pipe after it brings you close to a mental breakdown.
Cons:
· It’s a Japanese made POS and it fits like trash. Garbage.
· It takes wayyy to long to install.
· COBB has the worst customer support I have ever seen.
· It’s a turd in a shiny wrapper

I had to get my car running again and wasn’t going to wait another week for a new one. I have a half mile race this Saturday so I need to get my ducks in order. I suggest people really consider other charge pipes before cobb, this isn’t their first bad review(google it) on a charge pipe. I’m sure an ebay charge pipe no name would fit better and get to you faster.

Shipping: 2day air means 3 days. What is comical is I ordered some filters off ebay with free shipping Thursday, and they arrived Monday morning before an item I ordered the day before and paid for faster shipping….Anyway. Cobb has a very small disclaimer nowhere near the shipping options saying they don’t do weekend deliveries. When I emailed them Friday morning asking why it was coming Monday instead of Saturday, I didn’t get a response till Tuesday morning (9/29). Basically blaming me for not creating a user account with them and saying how they are great at shipping (an email oozing with sarcasm).

TLDR: Cobb charge pipe fit like garbage, had to go mad scientist on it, customer support was nonexistent. 1/10 with rice.
Side note: the oring in the CP is the same as the oring on the oil filter.

I've emailed them in-depth on this and their response was don't like it? Return it. So they don't really stand behind their products. No offer to ship new one and me return this one after I get a one they cleaned up or anything just tough luck. In fact he suggested if I was worried about the seal I should do a smoke test...you know cause their brand new CP needs a smoke test to make sure its not leaking.....ffs

xDrive Front Suspension Upgrade - Finally

RWD drivers can select from a plethora of aftermarket suspension upgrades, while xDrive owners are limited to rear suspension improvements like M3 control links because our front drive suspension is completely different from the RWD design. It seems reasonable that many / most xDrive owners select this model for utility over handling dynamics.

For the small (but dedicated!) group of xDrive owners who love driving their AWD cars with purpose on the track, there's a new option for upgrading our front suspensions. I'm not aware of any other front suspension upgrades for xDrive (besides poly bushings and ARBs, both questionable moves IMO).

These are standard OEM xDrive front tension arms press-fit with HD sealed spherical bearings. These bearings replace the cute little fluid-filled squishy things that come standard. The OEM bushings isolate the occupants well from NVH, but in so doing leave too much compliance in the system for precision / performance. The idea is to mitigate compliance in the bushing so that the suspension geometry / components can function better. The seals should allow these to be used in a street application without accelerated wear.

What about M3 control links? Even if they fit (they don't), consider their benefits: 1) lower unsprung weight (Al vs steel), 2) less compliant bushings, and 3) wider camber range. In our case, these sealed spherical bearings are less compliant than the rubber M3 version, and the wider camber range is a non-issue if one already has installed camber plates. The only thing we miss is the sexy Al material in the M3 links.

Initial impression is: BIG. They seem robust. These were delivered today and will be installed tomorrow, so no review yet. The benefits described above are 'in theory'. They ought to work, but haven't been confirmed. Yet.

Trying to load pics but no success. Will follow-up with more, later.
