Paddle shift on the 2014 F30 series is fairly poorly implemented. Here's my complaints:
When in normal drive mode, you can easily paddle shift to a desired gear. However, it shifts back to drive way more frequently and too swiftly for nearly all the driving I do. To get it to hold gear you have to....
... shift to Ds shift mode. Now paddle shift will stay in the gear you want forever. To get back to D mode, you have to physically move the shift lever back to D. If you want to stay in Ds mode, you have to twiddle the shifter, first to D, then back to Ds.
(while you're at it, put 8th gear back into Ds mode for highway cruising. Yes, I know it will eventually shift to 8th gear in Ds above about 105mph. That's not particularly useful to me....)
So, how should it work? Here you go:
Paddle shift implementation in our Mercedes AMG SL is far better. Here's how that works: if you paddle shift from any position it stays in paddle shift mode, regardless. It never falls out. HOWEVER, if you want to shift back to "D" or "Ds", you simply hold the right paddle in for about a half second. Kinda of a long-press, works brilliantly, no touching the gear knob.
Another awesome feature on the Mercedes: if you long-hold the left paddle, it automatically selects the best passing gear. Usually, this means 4th gear (when cruising at highway speed; 7 speed transmission). It drops straight from 7th to 4th (or 3rd or 5th). Another fantastic feature, we use all the time.
Would *much* prefer that BMW adopts Mercedes shift logic. Matches my driving style (and I would guess most others) far better than the F30 implementation.
