Splash Screen - Purpose and Display Frequency

This may just under the totem pole in terms of priority and in terms of quality of discussion, but here it goes:

I am pretty sure the splash screen has no purpose other than to provide a welcome gesture. When does it come on? I have seen mine come on 3 or 4 times, and half the time it is interrupted. and goes to whatever was iDrive was pointing at before. I have tried key fob lock/unlock, radio/display on/off. etc.
