Going 18x8.5 square -- 235, 245, or 255 width?

Hi all -- I've run some searches and seen that this has been discussed from time to time but I've nothing dispositive and many conflicting answers.

I'm going with 219M fronts all around (18 x 8.5 ET 29).

I want a decent balance of dry grip + hydroplaning resistance/snow traction. Don't want to roll my fenders or anything -- I'm not worried about inside clearance at all because it looks like the gap is the same as stock with these wheels.

Car is a stock non-sport '06 325i (but I might give it a very minor drop soon [think M-sport]).

I hate, hate, HATE the look of 'stretched' tires (and the uneven wear they promote).

I'm thinking 235/40/18 is the best tire size to go with, but I've seen some folks suggest that 235s look ever so slightly stretched on an 8.5" wheel. Nonsense, right? On the other hand, 225/40/18 will almost certainly look stretched, correct? For what it's worth, looking at Hankook S1s.

Anyone have any pictures?

Thanks.
