Just in case anyone is interested, I went for it and bought the "Connect" type Snap-in Adapter for the iPhone5/5S and it seems to work fine for Music and Apps from an iPhone 5.
I have all my music on an iPod Classic connected up with the white apple cable into the USB port and didn't want to keep unplugging the iPod to plug in the phone etc.. also don't really want to be using my phone for Music, but like using it for Apps, Email and so on.
Anyway, I now have the iPod wired up with the cable for Music and the iPhone is now available for Apps via the Snap-in Adapter.
From the Snap-in I tested the BMW Connected App, Glympse, Stitcher, Web Radio, Aupeo etc.. all seems to work fine (Music also works of course).
However, upon initial installation, I had to reboot the Idrive system as it didn't seem to see it (hold the volume button in for a number of seconds, it goes through a complete shutdown/reboot), upon restart it seemed to kick into life and it's been working ever since.
