I have frequented the Bob is the Oil Guy forums as long as I can remember... and always had a debate with myself about which oil is better over which with my different cars... No two oil brands/weights are made equal. Some folks gloss over it and say X brand is better than Y and call it a day... some say that X and Y brand are the same just based on the weight - that either will do...
My car details:
BMW, E92, 325i (2.5) Auto, 2007.
Recommended Oil on websites: Catrol say 0w30 and this is what the car has had since new up until now... it now has Mobil 1... Shell Lube Match suggest 5w40 and Eurocarparts says 5w40 - regardless of hear say of how BMW had an alleged deal at the time on 0w30 and pushed that...
What my mechanic says: "Switch to 5w30 it is okay."
What I think: "I am happy with the 0w30 so far so what is the best for me?"
Research:
0w40 vs 5w30 vs 0w30: http://ift.tt/1wAimeG
Fantasic article on oil comparisons and testing. Busting the old myth of zinc while he is at it.
The guy who composed that article regularly updates his blog. Really thorough and useful in-depth read: http://ift.tt/1DG2Ayl
Viscosity Explained: http://ift.tt/1wAinPC and http://ift.tt/1DG2Ayn
ASTM D2896 - 07a Standard Test Method for Base Number of Petroleum Products by Potentiometric Perchloric Acid Titration: http://ift.tt/1wAinPG
CSS Viscosity: http://ift.tt/1wAinPK
So I settled the debate for now. If I am to use 0w30 then this is my choice: http://ift.tt/1wAinPO
If you are bored or want to arm yourself with a bit more knowledge to make an informed decision then I hope these links help. A lot to read but worth it.
